Institute for Languages
When the Institute for Languages was founded in 1993, it was mainly meant to meet the language learning needs of students at Friedensau Adventist University. This institute coordinates the different language courses offered in the various departments and consequently all instructors who teach languages are part of it. The courses described below are currently offered mainly to establish a basis for successful studies in the subjects and subject combinations offered by the university.The one-year course "German as a Foreign Language" offers applicants, who do not have the necessary fluency, appropriate training leading to a state recognized examination. This provides the opportunity to achieve both the general and scientific language proficiency required to complete the chosen course of study.
Profound knowledge of the original languages of the Bible is one of the basic requirements for the theological programmes. This includes Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek. The "Hebraicum" as a state recognized examination and certificate can be achieved after two semesters of instruction during the first year of studies. The likewise recognized "Graecum" examination can be taken at the end of the second year of studies.
Another area of language instruction serves students of all faculties and subjects. Students must be able to work with a great deal of scientific literature which is published in English and therefore it is necessary for them to achieve a certain level of proficiency in this language. Courses are offered at various levels of proficiency.
The institute also runs a Writing Centre that offers proof-reading services in the preparation of papers for seminars and degree theses.
The scientific aspect of the institute is primarily concerned with the qualification and training of its personnel, whose research is related to German and English literature as well as the linguistic functions of Hebrew and aspects of instruction in ancient languages.
