Encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventists

This international project aims at producing a multi-volume encyclopedia on the history, practices and beliefs of the global Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church. In addition, an online edition with a Wikipedia-like website will be available by 2020. This project was started by the SDA General Conference Office of Archives, Statistics, and Research in 2015. Globally, this project will draw on the expertise of thousands of scholars.

The denomination’s Inter-European Division (EUD) chose Friedensau Adventist University to serve as the regional office. To this effect, Stefan Höschele serves as regional editor for this project. Daniel Heinz, archivist at the Historical Archives of the SDA Church in Europe, serves as regional editor for the Euro-Asia Division (ESD). Both work in collaboration with the Institute of Adventist Studies at Friedensau.

Call for Papers: Third International Symposium, ThH Friedensau, April 23–26, 2018

Sample Article Summaries:

Albert Bodenmann

Albert Bodenmann (1925-2002) by Reinhard Bodenmann

His theological interests centered mostly on prophecy, which he had studied intensively during his entire life. He had read the books of Ludwig Richard Conradi, Ellen G. White, Pierre Lanarès and Le Roy Edwin Froom. Typical of his work as a missionary was his interest for other cultures, which he appreciated without condescension, even though he always remained convinced of the superiority of Christianity over other religions. He always tried to distinguish between Christianity and the Western culture – even though he did not always succeed judging from an African point of view – and advocated change among the natives only where, according to him, there was a conflict with Christianity or where the health of individuals was compromised.

Erwin Bauermann

Erwin Bauermann (1898-1962) by Daniel Heinz (Trans. Chigemezi N. Wogu)

Born in Stollen near Remscheid-Lüttringhausen, he joined the Adventists in Solingen in 1917. His pious mother was a member of the Advent church community in Wuppertal-Barmen. While fighting in WWI, Bauermann, a young soldier, boldly fought for a work-free Sabbath and suffered for that in prison. After escaping the “hell” of Vedun, he became a determined was opponent. As a soldier, he refused military service and hoped to serve as a paramedic. Obedience to God was his first priority. As a result, he was condemned to death in December 1939 by a war court in Wuppertal. A judge, who knew and appreciated the SDAs, converted his sentence into a multi-year concentration camp (Esterwegen, Oranienburg-Sachsenhausen, among others). Even as a concentration camp prisoner, Bauermann refused to work on the Sabbath despite torture. He survived the death march of Oranienburg.

Henri Evard

Henri Evard, PhD (1898-1983) by Claude M. Villeneuve
Both Dr Evard and his wife belonged to the category of dedicated persons, full of respect for others, humble and never seeking honor nor pushing for personal interests. Jeanne remained faithful and efficient, working in the steps of her husband as a discreet and loving spouse and mother. Dr Evard’s objectivity in all of his report presentations and the narrative of his Mauritius experience are the demonstration of a scientific mind paired with professional dedication to Education. His contribution in maintaining the Seminary in France during the difficult years of WW2 and the implementation and development of Education in Mauritius remain a testimony of his profound loyalty to the values of the Church.

Julius J. Graf

Julius J. Graf (1851-1927) by Denis Kaiser

Julius Johann Friedrich Graf is a prime example of someone who was a missionary at heart. He was already in his thirties when he accepted the Seventh-day Adventist faith and in his forties when he entered the ministry. He nevertheless sacrificed his possessions and security to share the good news of salvation with fellow Germans in North America. Julius and Bertha further felt the need to grant their children an Adventist education and at least two of them put their lives in the service of the church, following the self-sacrificing example of their parents. Read full article  of Julius J. Graf (D. Kaiser)

Henri Monnier

Henri Monnier (1896-1944) by Russell S. Staples
Monnier served as a pioneer missionary to Rwanda. His missionary work is a story of self-less ministry in a foreign land. Even when he lost his wife and encountered difficult situations in his work, his zeal to evangelize never quenched. He would establish positive relationships with the local communities learn their language and translate the book of Acts into the local language. No wonder the locals called him Rukandirango the mighty man. His mission theologizing revealed that he appreciated the religious consciousness of his hosts. This in turn affected the growth of Adventist mission especially in Rwankeri before WWII. His tragic death at the age of 48 was a tragic loss of one of the Church’s greatest missionaries.
