Reiner S\u00f6rries gave a talk on \"Das Gel\u00e4chter wider den Tod\" (Laughter against Death) in the library of Friedensau Adventist University (FAU). This event was part of the event series \"Eine Uni \u2013 ein Buch\" (One University\u2014One Book).<\/p>\n<p>The secular meritocracy tries to give answers to the questions of how to cope with life, but it refuses or negates the questions of death. Although religions show perspectives beyond finite life, they are unstoppably in retreat, at least in industrial societies. But what do they actually say about the \"empirical nothing\" after death? Are heaven or hell more attractive than rebirth and transmigration of souls? Or can modern society still find secular scientific evidence for life after death? Or does it even succeed in eliminating death?
