Vita

Jan A. Sigvartsen PhD is an Associate Professor of Old Testament at the Theologische Hochschule Friedensau, Germany.  He is also their Doctoral Programs Coordinator and the Associate Director for the Institute of Biblical Studies and Archeology.  He is currently associated with the Balu’a Regional Archaeological Project, a major Iron Age Moabite archaeological dig site in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.  During his 20 year academic career, he has authored over 40 publications and been a part of 15 scholarly research projects.

WORK HISTORY – Prior to his appointment at Friedensau in 2017, Jan taught both undergraduate and graduate levels, was a researcher, faculty senator, Doctoral Programs Committee member, and academic editor at Andrews University, USA, commencing in 2001.

RESEARCH AND TEACHING SPECIALIZATION – Jan’s areas of specialization are Old Testament Exegesis and Theology, Second Temple Period Judaism, and Archaeology.  He undertook his PhD in Religion at Andrews University, USA and was also a Visiting Research Fellow for two years at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.  See his past and current research sections below for more details about the 15 scholarly research projects Jan has participated in during his academic career.

GLOBAL IMPACT – Jan is best known for his two major works where he identified all of the resurrection and afterlife beliefs in the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, discussed and diagramed the complete beliefs (18), and how these beliefs utilized the books that later formed the TaNaKh.  He is also known as the author of ExegesisPaper.com, a website that teaches students how to undertake exegesis, the primary research methodology of scholarly biblical research. This free online resource has been used by over 100,000 students from more than 180 countries.

PERSONAL – Jan speaks English, Norwegian, and is learning German. He was born in Norway, is also a citizen of the United States, and has lived in Norway, England, the United States, Israel, Australia, and Germany. He loves to travel and, given his Viking heritage, wants to build a Viking ship one day. He is married to Leanne Sigvartsen (a triple United States, Australian, and Maltese citizen), who is currently an academic research project manager.  She trained as a psychologist, and holds additional qualifications in business and adult education.  They have three sons who are all STEM, NASA, and Star Wars fans.
