Aramaic—the Language of Jesus

05. Dec. 2019

On Monday, December 2, 2019, Prof. Dr. Dmytro Tsolin gave a lecture on his field of expertise, Aramaic Studies. He talked about “Aramaic—the Language of Jesus”. The subject is interesting in that Jesus Christ was Hebrew-speaking in his day, although this was the scholarly language. In daily life, people spoke Aramaic. For instance, when we consider the Lord's Prayer the ultimate prayer given by Jesus, we must be aware of the fact that it was not spoken in German, English, or Greek, but in Aramaic for the first time. Dmytro Tsolin is Professor of Languages at The National University of Ostroh Academy in the Ukraine. Since 2018, he has been a scholar of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Faculty of Theology.
