Historical overview
Friedensau has been a center of education since 1899. On November 19, 1899, the "Industrial and Missionary School" began its work with just seven students under very modest conditions. The facilities consisted of the buildings of an old mill on the Ihle River, first mentioned in 1306.
Over the next decade, an ensemble of large educational and residential buildings was constructed, which continue to shape the campus's appearance to this day. Guided by a whole-person educational philosophy, additional facilities were established, including a sanatorium, workshops, and a nutrition factory. These provided practical training and offered students opportunities to earn an income. By the eve of the First World War, up to 250 people benefited from the educational programs annually.
During the First World War, the Ministry of War transformed the campus into a military hospital, a function it also served during the Second World War. Educational activities at Friedensau resumed in 1947.
During the GDR era, the SED government restricted the institution to the training of church employees. In 1983, the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church accredited the seminary as a senior college. From the 1980s onwards, students from Eastern Europe and Africa were welcomed. On September 15, 1990, the seminary achieved state recognition. Alongside the School of Theology, a School of Social Sciences was established.
Today, Friedensau Adventist University is a recognized academic institution offering university-level degrees in theology and social work.
