Registration at the Residents‘ Registration Office

After arriving in Germany, you must go straight to the registration authority (Einwohnermeldeamt) to give them your address in Germany. International students must go immediately to the immigration authority (Ausländer- behörde) in order to apply for „residence permit for the purpose of studying“.   

The Residents’ Registration Office for the Friedensau community is in the town hall of Möckern (Friedensau is a part of Möckern). You are required to register here as a primary or secondary resident of Friedensau. For this purpose, you need to register within a week of your arrival. Bring your passport or ID card.

Important: Non-German students must also report to the registration office in person when they move away again.

Moving (Change of residence)

If you are moving and your address is going to change, you must inform the Registration authority (Einwohnermeldeamt). Please update your Certificate of Registration (Meldebescheinigung) there.

You need a Certificate of registration (Meldebescheinigung) to open a bank account, get a cellphone contract, register a vehicle or apply for a residence permit. It‘s the official way to prove that you live at a certain address. You can request this certificate from the registration authority (Einwohnermeldeamt).   

For the appointment, you need to bring:   

  • a passport (possibly with visa) or personal identification card and
  • a completed and signed housing confirmation from your landlord,
  • possibly marriage certificate and possibly birth certificates of children as originals and an officially verified translation.   

The document is printed out and given to you during the appointment. In the case of switching flats / rooms in different buildings on campus, or if you move to another city, the Meldebescheinigung needs to be renewed. In some cases, this document also needs to be updated; as some institutions want to see that your current address hasn’t changed.
