The Christmas Oratorio – consisting of a total of six cantatas – tells the story of the birth of Christ; it conveys hope and joy, warmth and light. When it was written in 1734, Johann Sebastian Bach was Thomascantor and city music director in Leipzig. Cantatas 1 to 3 of the cycle were premiered at Christmas 1734 in the Leipzig churches of St. Nikolai and St. Thomas.

The event is organised by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Berlin-Central German Union, in cooperation with Friedensau Adventist University. The Christmas Oratorio will be performed once more by the same ensemble on 30 November 2025 at 6 p.m. in St. Thomas Church in Erfurt.
