Interchurch Relations in Seventh-day Adventist History: A Study in Ecumenics

Description and Goal

The history, theology, and logic of Seventh-day Adventist relationships to other denominations is a field which has not yet been treated in a major study, although this church has a 150-year history and has grown to over 17 million members worldwide. Despite its position at the periphery of ecumenical activity, this vigorous religious movement contributes to ecumenical practice and thinking in its own ways. This project has brought forth a 400-page study on the topic, building on the publications below and a comprehensive collection of materials. The title of the study is „Interchurch Relations in Seventh-Day Adventist History: A Study in Ecumenics“; it was submitted as a habilitation thesis to the Protestant Theological Faculty of Charles University, Prague, in September 2016, and successfully defended in June 2017.

A bibliography of Adventist magazine articles dealing with interchurch relations (28 pages) can be downloaded here.

Invitation to Exchange Ideas

I am happy to exchange ideas with researchers engaged in the history, theology, and sociology of interchurch relations, particularly those interested in the free church tradition, and in Adventist studies. Please contact me by e-mail.

Icon PlusCompleted Project: Encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventists

Encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventists

From 2015 to 2020, I served as Regional Editor for the project Encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventists in a major part of Europe (Inter-European Division of Seventh-day Adventists). My task was to coordinate the writing of articles, mainly historical, for this global publication project. Most of the day-to-day activities were run by project employee / research associate Chigemezi Nnadozie Wogu, M.T.S., a 2015 graduate of Friedensau Adventist University. In the academic year 2018-19, researchers Jón H. Stefánsson, M.A., and Eudritch Jean, M.T.S., were also part of the team. Dr. Daniel Heinz, archivist of the Historical Archive of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Europe, located here in Friedensau, served as Regional Editor for the ESD region (most of the former Soviet Union countries).

While the running of the project is essentially finished, articles continue to be written for this region of the world and for others. If you are interested in writing on a person from this list that does not have a published article yet, please contact me.

See here the the complete EUD list of articles to be written.

See also the list of EUD articles submitted by early 2020.

The researchers in the team themselves wrote and contributed to dozens of articles:  Articles written by C. N. Wogu  -  articles written by J. Stefánsson  -  articles written by E. Jean  -  articles written by S. Höschele  -  articles written by D. Heinz.
